Selection for (i), (ii) , (iii) and (iv) is based on an aptitude test and interview subsequent to short-listing based on valid GATE score and for (v) based on valid GATE score only. (For M.Tech)

Why to do Masters degree ?

Do I really need to do M.Tech? or just start early and find a job? Spend some time after the degree, learn some professional course and start looking for a job. What shall I do? Everything is dark and I don’t know how the future will be. I want to do something good and help others but I don’t know how.

These are few common questions that almost every final year engineering student has in mind. I had similar questions in my mind too and I had friends who made different decisions at that time. Few prepared GRE and TOFEL and wanted to go US and few took computer courses and joined software industry, few trying for government jobs and few like me moving towards for Masters degree.

First let me share my reasons of doing M.Tech. I always thought of doing a highly respected, high paid job and a job where I have more control to do things that I like. Unfortunately, I found myself not competent enough to compete with top students for finding a suitable job. On the other hand, trying to reach there with experience in smaller companies usually takes a lot of time and after that gaining a authoritative position would have taken few more years.

Here, I got a chance to think of the best way to get higher positions in a short time. I felt that the entry to this is only possible through IITs. For that either I had to wait for a year and give GATE and score high or try for PhD.

The first thing I assured myself for M.Tech is to avoid mistakes I did in B.Tech.

The first and foremost advantage of doing M.Tech is that you get time to think where things are going and how you can control them. Where do you want to go and what is your ultimate destination. You know the mistakes you made in B.Tech thus you can avoid them and improve to recover from them.

The second advantage of doing M.Tech is that you add a value to education and will definitely have benefit in the long run. As we are moving ahead in life our educational qualifications are becoming more and more important. At some point where all other competitors have same technical skills you will be given preference over others because of qualification.

The third advantage is that you will get more insight into the subjects as this time you are mature enough to understand the subjects. Usually teachers or professors are better than the ones who taught you in B.Tech and you are more exposed to applications.

The fourth advantage is you will have good friends who are similar to you and trying hard to move ahead in life. If your institute is good you will see all of them in high positions in future, their contacts may be good enough for you to start new projects and help many.

There are lots of other advantages of doing a higher degree. But there may be many social constraints and difficulties that may prevent you from doing master degree. Everyone knows their situation better than others and can make best decisions based on that. You can push your plans of having a master degree little later and gain few years of experience before. With M.Tech I also mean any master degree just not M.Tech. Wish you all the best for Brilliant future

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all India examination administered and conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National Coordination Board - GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India.

The GATE committee, which comprises of representatives from the administering institutes, is the sole authority for regulating the examination and declaring the results.

GATE is conducted through the constitution of eight zones. The zones and the corresponding administrative institutes are:

      Zone-1: Indian Institute of Science   Bengaluru
      Zone-2: Indian Institute of Technology Bombay
      Zone-3: Indian Institute of Technology Delhi
      Zone-4: Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati
      Zone-5: Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur

The overall coordination and responsibility of conducting GATE 2012 lies with Indian Institute of Technology Delhi,designated as the Organising Institute for GATE 2012 .

Admission to postgraduate programmes with MHRD and some other Government scholarships/assistantships in engineering colleges/institutes is open to those who qualify in GATE examination. GATE qualified candidates with Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technology/Architecture or Master's degree in any branch of Science/Mathematics/Statistics/Computer Applications are eligible for admission to Master's degree programmes in Engineering/Technology/Architecture as well as for Doctoral programmes in relevant branches of Science with MHRD or other government scholarships/assistantships. To avail the scholarship, the candidate must secure admission to such a postgraduate programme, as per the prevailing procedure of the admitting institution. However, candidates with Master's degree in Engineering/Technology/Architecture may seek admission to relevant Doctoral programmes with scholarship/assistantship without appearing in the GATE examination.

GATE qualification is also a minimum requirement to apply for various fellowships awarded by many Government organizations.

The GATE score, awarded in the range of 0 to 1000 reflects the candidates academic ability and will be based on his/her performance in GATE 2011 and the performances of all candidates who appeared in GATE in the last four years 2008-2011. Candidates with the same GATE score from different GATE papers and/or years can be considered to have the same performance level.

POSTGRADUATE ADMISSIONS WITH MHRD SCHOLARSHIP

As per the directives of the MHRD, the following procedure is to be adopted for admission to postgraduate programmes (Master and Doctoral) with MHRD scholarship/assistantship. The performance of the candidate in GATE will be considered for admission. If the candidate is to be selected through interview for postgraduate programmes, minimum 70% weightage is to be given to the performance in GATE. The remaining weightage (30% maximum) can be given to the candidate's academic record or performance in interview. Candidate opting for a general paper (XE or XL) may be further examined (by interview/written test) by the admitting institution. In such cases also the weightage for performance in GATE should not be less than 70%. The admitting institution will prescribe minimum passing percentage of marks in the interview. Some colleges/institutes specify GATE qualification as the mandatory requirement even for admission without MHRD scholarship/assistantship.

Candidates are advised to seek details of admission procedures and availability of MHRD scholarship/assistantship from the concerned admitting institution. The criteria for postgraduate admission with scholarship/assistantship are different for different admitting institutions. GATE offices will not entertain any enquiry about admission and award of scholarship/assistantship.

It is the responsibility of the admitting institution to award the MHRD scholarship/assistantship to only those candidates who secured marks equal to or more than the "qualifying mark" in the concerned GATE paper and for the corresponding category of the candidate . The management of the postgraduate scholarship/assistantship is also the responsibility of the admitting institution. The GATE committee also has no role in the award or disbursement of scholarship/assistantship. Similarly, reservation of seats under different categories is as per the policies and norms prevailing at the admitting institution and Government of India rules.

A candidate declared "GATE qualified at the time of admission" is entitled for MHRD fellowship for 24 months unless he/she loses it due to poor performance in the registered programme.

The students of Integrated Master Degree and Dual Degree programmes in Engineering/Technology are eligible to appear in GATE 2011 in order to qualify for the postgraduate scholarships in their own institutions only. They are not eligible for admission to a fresh M.E./M.Tech. programme.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) has invited applications for admission into various engineering courses, to be offered in the ensuing session 2011. The admissions are made through Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) exam, to be held on the date mentioned below. The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India examination administered and conducted in eight zones across the country, jointly by the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and seven Indian Institutes of Technology, on behalf of the National Coordinating Board.

How to Apply

Interested candidates can apply online by visiting the official website:  For applying online, candidates have to decide the payment option first. The payment options are Gateway payment or Challan payment. After selecting the payment mode, the applicant has to obtain SC/ST/PD Certificate (if applicable). Then, the applicant should fill the online application form and take a printout of the entire file. The duly filled application form, with appropriate enclosures must be sent by Registered or Speed post to the Chairman, GATE of the Zone, where the candidate prefers (corresponding to the 1st Choice of Examination City) to appear for the examination. It can be handed over personally to respective Zonal GATE Office.
                                        One can apply offline also. For applying offline, the candidate has to obtain the application form from the designated bank branches corresponding to each zone on cash payment or over the counter from Zonal GATE Office after handing over a DD for appropriate amount. Thereafter, the duly filled form with appropriate enclosures must be sent by Registered or Speed post to The Chairman, GATE of the Zone, where the candidate prefers (corresponding to the 1st Choice of Examination City) to appear for the examination.
