gate score

GATE Score
The GATE score, awarded in the range of 0 to 1000 reflects the candidates academic ability and will be based on his/her performance in GATE 2011 and the performances of all candidates who appeared in GATE in the last four years 2008-2011. Candidates with the same GATE score from different GATE papers and/or years can be considered to have the same performance level.
GATE Score

where,
m : marks obtained by the candidate.
a:  average of marks of all candidates who appeared in the paper
mentioned on this scorecard in GATE 2011
s:  standard deviation of marks of all candidates who appeared in the paper
mentioned on this scorecard in GATE 2011
ag: average (global) of marks of all candidates who appeared across all papers
        and years 2008-2011
sg: standard deviation (global) of marks of all candidates who appeared across
all papers and years 2008- 2011
The maximum score can be 1000.
GATE Percentile Score
The percentile score of a candidate indicates the percentage of candidates who appeared in the same paper
and scored less marks than him/her. It is calculated as follows: If N is the total number of candidates appearing
in a paper, then the percentile score P is given as,
P = (number of candidates who have scored less marks than the candidate / N) x 100
A typical qualitative interpretation of the GATE SCORE, for example, can be as follows:
Ability Level GATE Score Range
Outstanding 800 to 1000
Excellent 675 to 800
Very good 550 to 675
Good 425 to 550
Above average 300 to 425
Average 100 to 300
Below average Below 100

GATE Score Analysis

Getting admission into master programme in IITs is a dream for many students. To turn this dream into reality, students prepare hard to get high scores in GATE(Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) Examination. The admission is competitive as there are limited seats for different engineering courses.

GATE Score

The GATE cutoff for IIT Kanpur is around 700 for Computer Science for direct admissions. For other branches like EC, IT the cutoff is around 750. The cutoff is lower for a call to the interview and written test. GATE cutoff is around 600 for getting interview call from IITs. To get good score, it is important that you analyze your performance in mock tests.
The GATE cutoff for Electronics and Communication, Mechanical Engineering is higher than for other engineering branches like Computer Science, Electrical Engineering at IITs (Indian Institute of Technology). The cutoff for Civil Engineering is lower compared to Computer science, Electrical Engineering.
The GATE score is valid for two years from the date of announcement of GATE results. The GATE score is made available to all the candidates irrespective of whether they qualified or not. Students can get GATE results from the GATE website or from GATE offices of IISc/IITs.
It is not necessary that if you have lower GATE score, then you will not be called for interview and written test. The candidates with outstanding achievements like publications, industry experience may be called for the interview despite lower score. Even candidates with lower GATE score may get admission if they have good profile. The GATE cutoff is calculated every year on the basis of number of applications received. Hence theGATE cutoff 2011 may vary from GATE 2010 cutoff. For direct admissions, the cutoff is higher. However, those with slightly lower score may get call from IITs for written test or interviews.
